Real to Reel Productions is developing a feature length docu-drama based on Vivian Kaplan’s book Ten Green Bottles: Vienna to Shanghai – Journey of Fear and Hope. We’ve created a Flickr group to gather more research and to share the stories of Shanghailanders with the world.
Shanghailanders refers to the nearly 20,000 Jews who escaped Hitler’s ever tightening noose in the late 1930s and found refuge in the most unlikely of places – Shanghai, China. They went from a culture of opera and coffee houses, to opium dens and the chaos of a brutal war raging between China and Japan. But they survived, adapted, and thrived in a strange haven they could never have imagined.
After the war ended, the majority of Shanghailanders, as they called themselves, left China and settled in countries like Canada, the USA, and Australia. They left a distinct cultural footprint on the city. However the memories, photographs, stories, and archival material from this era dispersed with the Diaspora. Ten Green Bottles: Stories from the Shanghai Ghetto on Flickr is an online repository for the history of the Shanghailanders.
